A maverick of the art world, Hambling’s uncompromising approach to her work has on occasion caused controversy but behind the flamboyant personality, a deeply sensitive artist of exceptionally expressive and generous vision exists. Her monumental sculpture ‘Scallop’ 2003, on Aldeburgh beach in Suffolk, her tribute to Benjamin Britten, may have divided the public and critics alike, but it led to a magnificent series of paintings and studies of the sea which has continued to preoccupy the artist. "Waves Breaking" was the first showing in the North of England of these powerful paintings. The relentless movement of the sea continues to absorb Hambling as she skilfully seizes and distills the speed and drama of the waves as they build and dissolve.
