Hambling's first encounter with Amanda Barrie was in the old Members' Enclosure during Wimbledon. They became great friends. Amanda became Hambling's muse: a muse with a sharp eye who challenged and contributed whenever they discussed work. That relationship was the inspiration for the Laugh paintings (see category towards laughter on right hand side).
This picture is also featured in, 'Maggi Hambling, the Works' by Andrew Lambirth. Book available from this website. See publications page.
