Following the death and funeral of her mother, Maggi Hambling recounts: "I had a dream of the moon being broken, something it seems to me that scientists in their wisdom might accidentally do. It was shocking, because I think of the moon as a reassuringly permanent friend. I made a number of drawings and then large oils. It was only afterwards I learnt that the moon is one of the symbols of the mother."
