In his book "Maggi Hambling, The Works" Andrew Lambirth asked Maggi whether the recent North Sea paintings mark a new departure. For a start, they are a lot larger.

Maggi Hambling: "I try to paint as if I'm in the sea or very close to it, rather than observing from a distance. At any moment it could engulf me. The sea, after all, is terrifying. The size of the canvas demands a lot of movement on my part from side to side and from top to bottom. When I painted Max Wall he said I darted about like a bird. When I paint the sea it's more of a dance"
