This edition of 100 signed silk-screen prints, produced by Maggi Hambling and master printmaker Ian Wilkinson, was published by IAP Fine Art, London, in May 2006. The edition was produced by Maggi Hambling partly to celebrate her friend British jazz singer George Melly's 80th birthday year, and partly to raise money for the Terrence Higgins Trust. The image is partially derived from the central figure in the 3-figure portrait of Melly by the artist now hanging in the National Portrait Gallery. For this silk-screen portrait, with screens hand-touched by the artist, Hambling chose to set the figure at an angle to give the impression of dancing, since George Melly used to dance while singing. Hambling has set George in a silver space to create a new and unique image, only existing in this edition of signed silk-screen prints. (Although the silver background is very striking in life, it is sadly impossible to reproduce the silver online here). The edition was launched in London by Stephen Fry, Maggi Hambling and George Melly. (Stephen Fry being among the first to purchase a silk-screen from the edition). £75 from the sale of each goes directly to the Terrence Higgins Trust, helping people with HIV and AIDS. Since George Melly's death, a further £75 from each sale will be donated to the British charity For Dementia.
