Glazed, and framed in a slightly battered but quite handsome gilt frame, this painting has come from a private collection, and is now available from IAP Fine Art, London, or from this website. Signed "HAMBLING '79" in Maggi's bold
upper case hand on the back.

This painting has been authenticated by Maggi Hambling herself. She was great friends with David Crawford, a student at Wimbledon Art School, and performed several cabaret numbers with him, including impersonations of Marlene Dietrich when she was the older Dietrich and David the younger, and they were tied at the waist. David Crawford now lives with George Chakiris, one of the stars of West Side Story, who also owns the naked portrait Hambling painted of Crawford the same year and which features in MAGGI HAMBLING THE WORKS and conversations with Andrew Lambirth (Unicorn Press 2006) available from this website, see Publications.

Hambling painted her friend partly because he was handsome and he had the biggest lips she had ever seen. For further information, or to view by appointment only, please contact us.
