Artist: Maggi Hambling
Subject: Selected Paintings
Year of Work: 1980
Size: 38" x 27"
SOLD. Private collection, UK. This painting was produced by Maggi Hambling at the time of her tenure as first Artist in Residence at the National Gallery, London (1980-81). This work is featured in the monograph 'MAGGI HAMBLING THE WORKS and conversations with Andrew Lambirth' (Unicorn Press, 2006).
Occasionally, rather than her usual daily drive, Hambling would take the bus from her home to the NG during the above-mentioned teunure. As she notes on p.69 of the monograph, (having travelled on the upper deck): "when the bus stopped at Vauxhall, I looked down into the television room of a hostel for homeless men (one of the Rowton Houses), and the memory of what I had seen was uncomfortable".
