Maggi Hambling was the first artist in Residence at the National Gallery. In her book "Maggi Hambling, The Works", available from the publications page, Maggi tells us that becoming the first artist in residence had stirred up a lot of publicity. She was even featured on Newsnight. The scheme was originally planned to run for three months but as it turned out to be a success Hambling was asked to stay for a further three, which she did.
This charcoal 'Study from Manet's 'Execution of the Emperor Maximilian', 1981' is one of the many studies made during Hambling's residency at the National Gallery.
